Combating Mental Health distress through Exercise

In our fast-paced and stressful world taking care of our mental well-being is more crucial than ever. There are numerous strategies to improve mental health. The one powerful and accessible tool is exercise. Exercise has been proven to have a positive effect on mental health, particularly for depression or anxiety.


During exercise, the brain releases hormones known as endorphins. They are natural mood elevators. These hormones create a sense of well-being and calmness. Therefore, alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety.


Exercise also provides an excellent outlet for stress and tension. When exercising we redirect our focus away from worries and are fully immersed in the present. This break from our daily stressors allows our minds to be rejuvenated and relaxed. Therefore, exercise is an excellent outlet for stress and tension and also promotes a positive mindset.


Additionally, participating in group exercises or team sports fosters social connections. These group exercises provide an opportunity for social interaction and a sense of belonging. Organizations such as PDO Kenya provide expressive therapy for their clients, staff, and service providers. This includes activities such as dancing, yoga, and meditation among other physical activities. During these sessions, people get the chance to connect and exercise at the same time.


Nawiri which is a residential facility and a halfway home has incorporated exercise as part of its routine. Clients are engaged in physical activities such as cycling, table tennis, and long tennis among other activities. By taking the time to exercise regularly, we can boost our mental health and well-being. Therefore, exercise proves to be an invaluable tool for promoting our mental well-being.
