Updated: Apr 18, 2023

Workplace mental health is a crucial issue. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety cost the global economy $ 1 trillion in lost output each year. Work performance, productivity, and overall employee satisfaction can all be impacted by mental health issues.

The value of mental wellness in the workplace cannot be overstated.

Employers should identify the signs of poor mental health in their employees. Changes in behavior or mood, increased absenteeism, decreased output, or a rise in conflicts with coworkers are examples of warning signs. This changes can result in substantial financial losses for businesses/ organizations.

Employers can promote excellent mental health in the workplace in a variety of ways. One approach is to foster a positive work atmosphere. This entails fostering an environment in which employees feel comfortable sharing their mental health concerns with their managers and coworkers. Employers can also help workers manage their mental health by providing access to mental health resources such as counseling or employee support programs.

PDO Kenya, is an example of an organization which offers its employees access to therapy sessions to improve their well-being. Employees at PDO Kenya are given a day off work to rest and work out their personal businesses. Leading by example PDO-Kenya, a mental health organization understands the importance of mental health in the workplace.

Stress reduction is another method to promote mental health in the workplace. Employees can take measures to reduce workplace stress, which is a major contributor to poor mental health. Offering flexible work arrangements, such as telecommuting or flexible work hours, can assist workers in balancing their work and personal lives.

Employers can also provide stress management training, such as mindfulness or time management methods. PDO Kenya provides its employees with self-care activities. Employees get to experience that atmosphere that is free from the work environment, interact with each other, and do some expressive therapy.

Additionally, it is important for employers to prioritize their own mental health. Leaders who prioritize their own mental health set an example for their employees and create a culture where mental health is valued. Employers can also benefit from accessing mental health resources, such as counseling or coaching, to help them manage their own mental health.

In conclusion, mental health is a critical issue in the workplace. By prioritizing mental health in the workplace, employers can improve employee well-being, productivity, and job satisfaction.
