Gender-based violence stems from power dynamics. Gender-based violence perpetrators use violence to exert control over the persons abused. Survivor's of physical or psychological abuse frequently report feeling helpless and confined.
Gender-based violence has an impact on mental health and its consequences of should not be underestimated. According to research, female survivors of violence are more likely to suffer from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. When you feel helpless, you are more likely to develop mental health issues. Persons who have gone through abuse may feel helpless and hopeless. Such negative emotions have the potential to snowball into major psychological issues.
The emotional and mental health of a person are indicators of overall health. Abuse is also associated with psychological issues later in life. Survivors of gender-based violence may find it difficult to seek help due to feelings of stigma and shame.
To address the mental health issues that frequently accompany gender-based violence, survivors must first be released from the chains of power and control that keep them there. This includes assisting those in need and raising awareness. The toxic ideal of male superiority must also be challenged.
Giving people a place to express themselves can contribute to a more just and equitable world in which they can thrive. The cycle of abuse can be broken only if people recognize the importance of caring for their mental health as well as taking action to end violence against women. It is our responsibility to support survivors, raise awareness, and challenge the social norms that allow violence against women to occur. We can create a more just and peaceful world by listening to survivors and providing them with a platform.
