Supported-Decision making in Mental health

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Collaborative decision-making is a transformative approach that empowers persons living with mental health distress. This Client-centered approach recognizes the importance of involving individuals as active participants in their treatment plans.

Ultimately, it leads to improved treatment outcomes and holistic well-being. The opposite is substituted decision-making, where a decision is made on behalf of the client.

It values their autonomy, preferences, and lived experiences. Collaborative decision-making promotes a sense of ownership, trust, and shared responsibility by fostering collaboration between mental health professionals and individuals.

One of the fundamental principles is recognizing that persons living with mental health distress are experts in their own experiences. Their unique insights, perspectives, and preferences are crucial in formulating effective treatment plans.

By actively involving individuals in decision-making, mental health professionals demonstrate respect for their autonomy and agency. This approach creates a safe and supportive space for open dialogue and shared decision-making. As a result, more personalized and meaningful treatment options are made available.

Collaborative decision-making also fosters a partnership between mental health professionals and individuals. Mental health professionals contribute their clinical knowledge, skills, and evidence-based interventions. On the other hand, persons living with mental health distress bring their experiences, personal goals, and unique contextual factors.

Through respectful communication and active listening, professionals can better understand the needs and preferences of the individuals they serve. This shared understanding lays the foundation for jointly developing treatment plans that reflect the individual’s goals, values, and aspirations. It ensures a greater sense of ownership and commitment to the recovery journey.

At Nawiri Wellness Centre, collaborative decision-making is at the core of our approach to mental health treatment. We believe in honoring the agency and lived experiences of persons with mental health distress. Our multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment where individuals actively participate in their treatment planning.

By embracing collaborative decision-making, Nawiri Wellness Centre aims to empower individuals, promote their overall well-being, and facilitate their journey toward recovery and resilience.
