Alika Health Initiative

Giving mental health a human face

our story

The Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has shown, more than ever, how mental health is integral to health and well-being. There has never been a better time to start and grow community-based service among vulnerable populations. This is where Alika's story begins.

Alika Health Initiative is an NGO started and run by people with mental health lived experience. Concerned about lack of quality services and the disruption of services and supply of drugs occasioned by the pandemic, our founders decided to be part of the solution, not the problem. Community, empathy and hope are the core values that guide everything we do.

The Name

The Swahili word Alika means “to invite”. Through our work, we invite people to access the support they need; we invite people and organisations to join our community; we invite the people and institutions of Kenya to think differently about mental health.

Inspired by Kenyan culture and design, Alika’s logo shows two outstretched hands, representing the power of human connection and collaboration. It signifies Alika reaching out to those who need support, a kind and welcoming hand showing you that you are not alone.
